Frequently Asked Questions

Here’s some FAQs and useful things to know:

1. What services do you offer as a fiction editor?
My editing service is a combination of developmental editing and line editing. So, while I’ll catch errors in your story and suggest rephrasing and rewrites, my focus is on how you can develop and improve your story as a whole. Though I class myself as an editor, my approach also includes elements of coaching as well.

2. What experience level do I need to have to have editing work done?

There’s no requirement to have any experience in writing (besides having written something to edit!). I work with writers who are brand new to the craft, as well as writers who have completed multiple books and series. Whatever your experience level, I can help.

3. I just need some quick advice about an element of writing, where can I get that?
I’d recommend searching my YouTube channel. I’ve been making videos for quite a while, and will likely have a video covering what you’re looking for. I create content focused on fiction writing tips, editing advice, story analysis, and creative writing challenges designed to support writers at all levels.

4. Do you offer virtual consultations or video calls?

This is something I’m looking into, so feel free to email me at kieren@kierenwestwoodwriting if you’re interested.

5. What should I prepare before submitting my manuscript for editing?
Please ensure your manuscript is complete in draft form and formatted clearly. The story itself doesn’t have the be finished (entire novels for example) but the section you’re sending should be complete if possible.

Providing a brief description of your goals and any specific areas you want to focus on will also help tailor the editing process, but is optional.

6. How long does the editing process typically take?
The timeline depends on the length and complexity of your manuscript, as well as the type of editing requested. I provide estimated turnaround times during the initial consultation and often end up ahead of schedule. It also depends how many projects I’m working on at the time.

7. Can you help with self-publishing or traditional publishing advice?
I can give my thoughts, but that’s not my area of expertise. I’ve been around the block with self-publishing and while I briefly had an agent, but that’s as far as I got with traditional publishing. There are probably better sources of info out there than me!

8. Can I hire you as a writing coach?

This is something I’m also looking into, so feel feel free to email me at kieren@kierenwestwoodwriting if you’re interested in arranging something like that.

9. I can’t find you on social media, where are you?

I don’t really use it much! I find it too much of a distraction. If you’re looking for updates from me, consider joining my email list!
